Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor): The Fearless Voice of Modern British Pop

Rebecca Lucy Taylor, professionally known as Self Esteem, is one of the most daring and influential voices in modern British pop music. From her beginnings in the folk duo Slow Club to becoming a Mercury Prize-nominated solo artist, acclaimed theatre composer, and West End leading lady, Taylor has carved a career defined by honesty, creativity, and resilience.

Her third studio album, A Complicated Woman (2025), debuted at #5 on the UK Albums Chart, earning critical acclaim for its bold exploration of identity, empowerment, and societal pressure. With awards such as the Ivor Novello Visionary Award, Self Esteem continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary pop.

Early Life: Growing Up in Rotherham

Rebecca Lucy Taylor was born on 15 October 1986 in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. She grew up in a working-class family—her father a steelworker and amateur musician, her mother a secretary—experiences that shaped her grounded perspective and work ethic.

At Wales High School, Taylor discovered her passion for music under the guidance of teacher Antony Wright. Immersed in choir and choral music, she developed the vocal strength and harmony skills that would later define her solo work.

    Slow Club Years (2006–2017)

Taylor began her professional music career in 2006 as part of the folk duo Slow Club with Charles Watson. Over a decade, the band released multiple albums and toured extensively, earning a loyal following for their intricate arrangements and lively performances.

By 2016, creative differences prompted Taylor to seek new artistic directions. The final tour, documented in the film Our Most Brilliant Friends (2018), highlighted her desire to pursue a solo career, eventually leading to the creation of Self Esteem.

The Birth of Self Esteem (2015–2020)

Taylor first adopted the moniker Self Esteem in 2015 for artistic projects, including visual art, films, and short writings. Inspired by Queen’s theatricality and RuPaul’s Drag Race, she embraced confidence and bold self-expression in her solo music career.

Her debut solo single, “Your Wife” (2017), was released on Kick + Clap Records, followed by her first live show at Margate Arts Club. This modest beginning marked the start of a critically acclaimed journey in independent and pop music.

    Debut Album: Compliments Please (2019)

Taylor signed with Fiction Records in April 2018. Her first album, Compliments Please, released on 1 March 2019, received critical acclaim, including an 80/100 Metacritic rating.

    Key singles included:

    • Wrestling (2018)

    • Rollout (2018)

    • The Best (2019)

    • Girl Crush (2019)

A deluxe edition released later in 2019 added the track Rooms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Taylor organized Pxssy Pandemique, an online all-female festival supporting Women’s Aid.

Released on 22 October 2021, Prioritise Pleasure elevated Taylor to mainstream recognition. Produced with Johan Hugo Karlberg, the album combined spoken-word storytelling with experimental pop.

    Notable tracks include:

    • I Do This All the Time

    • Prioritise Pleasure

    • How Can I Help You

    • Moody

    • You Forever

The album peaked at #11 on the UK Albums Chart, received a Mercury Prize nomination, and cemented Taylor’s reputation as one of the UK’s most daring pop artists.

    Theatre and West End Achievements

Taylor’s artistry extends to theatre. She composed the Prima Facie soundtrack (2022), starring Jodie Comer, which won the 2023 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.

From September 2023 to March 2024, Taylor starred as Sally Bowles in Cabaret on the West End, blending vulnerability with theatrical power and expanding her creative repertoire.

Third Album: A Complicated Woman (2025)

Released on 25 April 2025 via Polydor Records, the album debuted at #5 on the UK Albums Chart.

    Thematically, it explores:

    • Self-doubt and empowerment

    • Body image and societal pressures

    • Relationships and personal growth

    Standout tracks:

    • I Do And I Don’t Care

    • Mother

    • 69

Taylor coined the concept of “The Deep Blue Okay”, symbolizing inner calm and resilience amid stress and anxiety.

    Live Performances and Stage Presence

Self Esteem’s live shows are renowned for:

    • Choreographed performances

    • Powerful vocal harmonies

    • Theatrical staging and visuals

Taylor draws inspiration from Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour and her shows integrate narrative storytelling with energetic pop music. Audiences are known to participate actively, reflecting Taylor’s unique connection with fans.

    Personal Life and Advocacy

Taylor maintains a private personal life, focusing on music, theatre, and artistic growth. She openly discusses mental health, body image, and the realities of working in the music industry.

In 2023, she received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Sheffield, recognizing her impact on music and culture. She also advocates for female empowerment, mental health awareness, and artistic integrity.

    Musical Style and Influences

    Self Esteem’s sound combines:

    • Pop, indie, experimental, and theatrical elements

    • Choral harmonies and drum-driven rhythms

    • Lyrics addressing relationships, self-image, feminism, and modern culture

Her influences include Madonna, Queen, Destiny’s Child, Rihanna, Little Mix, and Kanye West. She frequently incorporates digital culture, social media references, and contemporary issues into her music and visuals.

    Awards and Recognition

    • Ivor Novello Visionary Award (2025)

    • BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year (2021)

    • Mercury Prize nomination (2022) – Prioritise Pleasure

    • BRIT Awards nomination (2022)

These accolades reflect her status as a leading voice in British pop music.

    Legacy and Future Plans

Rebecca Lucy Taylor has become a symbol of fearless artistry, authenticity, and empowerment. She continues to explore theatre, write new music, and push creative boundaries while maintaining a grounded, relatable perspective.

    As she said in 2025:
“It’s a responsibility to make the younger me feel better, and anyone who feels behind or not good enough.”

Self Esteem exemplifies how artistic integrity and commercial success can coexist, making her one of the most important and inspiring voices in modern British music.
