FKA Twigs: The Visionary Artist Transforming Pop, Dance, and Visual Art

FKA twigs (Tahliah Debrett Barnett) is a genre-defying artist, singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and director who continues to redefine modern pop and experimental music. Known for her innovative blending of electronic, trip-hop, R&B, and avant-garde sounds, she has established herself as one of the most influential creators of her generation. From her humble beginnings as a scholarship student in Gloucestershire to winning a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album with her third album Eusexua in 2026, FKA twigs’ career is a testament to artistic courage, resilience, and vision.

Early Life: A Multicultural Foundation in Gloucestershire

Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born on 16 January 1988 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, to an English mother and Jamaican father, with Spanish ancestry from her maternal side. Raised mainly by her mother and stepfather, she grew up in a multicultural environment that would later inspire her artistry.

Barnett attended St Edward’s School, a Catholic school funded by scholarship. As the only mixed-race student, she experienced feelings of isolation, shaping her exploration of identity and self-expression. She trained in opera, ballet, and jazz, performing in school productions, and began singing with a jazz band at 13, drawing inspiration from legends like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye, as well as post-punk icons such as Siouxsie and the Banshees.

At 17, she moved to South London to attend the BRIT School, later transferring to Croydon College to study fine arts, setting the stage for her multidisciplinary career.

Dance Career: Laying the Foundation for Performance

Before her solo music career, Barnett worked as a backup dancer, appearing in music videos for Kylie Minogue, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Plan B, and Wretch 32. Her standout performances include Jessie J’s Do It Like a Dude (2010) and Price Tag (2011). During this time, she also worked at London clubs and started experimenting with her own music, producing early demos that reflected her unique artistic vision.

    The Birth of FKA Twigs

The stage name “twigs” was inspired by the sound her joints make when they crack. To avoid confusion with another act called The Twigs, she added “FKA,” a combination of letters chosen for their strong, ambiguous quality.

In 2012, she self-released EP1 on Bandcamp, posting visually striking videos for each track. She gained critical acclaim with EP2 (2013), co-produced with Arca, which led to recognition by BBC Sound of 2014, Spotify’s Spotlight, and Billboard’s “14 Artists to Watch,” marking her arrival as an innovative force in music.

    LP1: A Groundbreaking Debut

Her debut studio album, LP1 (2014), released through Young Turks, reached #16 UK Albums Chart and #30 US Billboard 200, earning a Mercury Prize nomination. LP1 was celebrated for its bold fusion of electronic beats, sensuality, and experimental pop, with tracks like Two Weeks showcasing her distinctive style. Barnett also began directing her own music videos, reinforcing her reputation as a multidisciplinary artist.

    M3LL155X: Expanding Artistic Boundaries

The 2015 EP M3LL155X explored themes of female empowerment, sexuality, and identity, accompanied by four self-directed videos. The EP reached #1 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart and included a residency at Manchester International Festival, blending music, performance art, and choreography.

    Personal Challenges and Hiatus

Between 2015 and 2019, Barnett faced health challenges, including uterine fibroid surgery, and endured public scrutiny during relationships with Robert Pattinson and Shia LaBeouf. Online harassment and racism deeply affected her mental health, influencing the emotional depth of her next projects.

    Magdalene: Vulnerability and Mastery

In 2019, Barnett released Cellophane, the lead single from her second album Magdalene, showcasing unprecedented emotional honesty. The album, co-produced with Nicolas Jaar, Skrillex, Jack Antonoff, and Oneohtrix Point Never, explored heartbreak, resilience, and identity, earning critical acclaim and topping the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

Barnett also made her acting debut in Honey Boy (2019), marking her entry into film alongside her evolving music career.

    Caprisongs: A Creative Rebirth

In 2022, Barnett released the mixtape Caprisongs, featuring collaborations with Pa Salieu, Daniel Caesar, Shygirl, Jorja Smith, and The Weeknd. The project debuted at #1 US Dance/Electronic Albums chart, reflecting a brighter, more accessible sound while maintaining her signature artistry.

    Eusexua: Grammy-Winning Achievement

Barnett’s third studio album, Eusexua (2025), blends New Age, dance-pop, and electronic experimentation across tracks like Perfect Stranger and the title track. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and won Best Dance/Electronic Music Album at the 68th Grammy Awards (2026), cementing FKA twigs’ status as a visionary artist of her era.

    Film Career

FKA twigs has expanded into acting, appearing in Honey Boy (2019), The Crow remake (2024), The Carpenter’s Son (2025), and the upcoming Mother Mary (2026), starring alongside Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.

    Personal Life

FKA twigs is not married and has no children. Since 2023, she has been in a relationship with filmmaker Jordan Hemingway, who has directed her Eusexua music projects. Barnett previously dated Robert Pattinson (2014–2017) and Matty Healy (2020–2022).

    Musical Style and Influences

Her music is genre-defying, merging electronic, trip-hop, R&B, and avant-garde elements. With a multi-octave classical vocal range, she pairs delicate vocals with bold electronic beats. Her influences include Billie Holiday, Björk, Kate Bush, Janet Jackson, and post-punk/new wave artists.

Lyrically, Barnett explores themes of empowerment, identity, sexuality, and mental health, while her visuals and live performances integrate dance, fashion, and cinematic storytelling.

    Net Worth and Physical Stats

    • Height: 5’3” (1.59 m)

    • Net Worth: ~$3 million

    Legacy

FKA twigs is a multidisciplinary visionary who has transformed personal struggles into artistic triumphs. Her career, spanning music, dance, film, and visual art, redefines contemporary pop culture and inspires a generation of creators. From a scholarship student in Gloucestershire to a Grammy-winning icon, FKA twigs remains at the cutting edge of music, performance, and visual storytelling.
