Princess Anne: The Tireless Workhorse of the British Monarchy

Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, is widely regarded as one of the most dedicated and hardworking members of the British Royal Family. Renowned for her no-nonsense attitude, remarkable work ethic, and unwavering commitment to charitable causes, she has carved a distinct role that transcends traditional royal expectations. From her Olympic equestrian achievements to her decades-long advocacy with Save the Children, and from her fearless interactions with the media to her steadfast public service, Anne has become the monarchy’s most reliable and respected figure.

In her mid-seventies, she continues to lead the Royal Family in official engagements, embodying the values of diligence, resilience, and service that defined her mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Early Life and Education: A Royal Childhood

Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was born on 15 August 1950 at Clarence House, London, on VJ Day, weighing six pounds. Her birth was celebrated with a 21-gun salute in Hyde Park. She was baptized in Buckingham Palace’s Music Room on 21 October 1950 by Archbishop Cyril Garbett.

As the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Anne grew up amidst the unique pressures of royal life. She was less than two when her grandfather, King George VI, passed away, and her mother became Queen. Raised primarily by nannies and a private governess, Anne displayed a spirited, curious, and independent personality from an early age.

At age 13, Anne became one of the first royal children to attend a regular school, enrolling as a boarder at Benenden School in Kent. Excelling in sports, especially horse riding, she achieved six O-levels and two A-levels in History and Geography, setting a precedent for royals receiving formal academic qualifications.

Equestrian Success: From Championships to the Olympics

Anne’s love for horses defined much of her life. Riding her mother’s horse Doublet, she won gold at the 1971 European Eventing Championships at just 21 years old. She added two silver medals in 1975 at the European Championships and became the first British royal to compete in the Olympic Games, representing Great Britain in the 1976 Montreal Olympics equestrian team event.

Her achievements earned her the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 1971, highlighting her prominence both as an athlete and as a modern, dynamic royal.

Personal Life: Marriages, Children, and Family Challenges

First Marriage to Captain Mark Phillips

Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips, an army officer and fellow equestrian, on 14 November 1973 at Westminster Abbey. The wedding was broadcast globally to an audience of 500 million viewers. Phillips declined a royal title, allowing their family greater privacy.

    They had two children:

    • Peter Phillips (b. 1977) – The Queen’s first grandchild

    • Zara Tindall (b. 1981) – The Queen’s first granddaughter

Anne and Mark chose not to give their children royal titles, allowing them more normal lives. Their marriage ended after Phillips’s affair, culminating in a divorce in 1992.

Second Marriage to Sir Timothy Laurence

Anne remarried on 12 December 1992 to Commander (later Vice Admiral) Sir Timothy Laurence, a former Royal Navy officer. Their intimate ceremony at Crathie Kirk, Scotland, made Anne the first royal divorcée to remarry since Henry VIII. Sir Timothy has remained her supportive partner.

The 1974 Kidnap Attempt: Courage in Crisis

On 20 March 1974, Anne survived a terrifying kidnap attempt in London. When gunman Ian Ball tried to stop her car, she famously responded, “Not bloody likely!” Her bravery became legendary, reinforcing her image as a courageous and composed royal.

    Royal Career: The Princess Royal

In June 1987, Queen Elizabeth II granted Anne the title Princess Royal, a lifetime honor for the monarch’s eldest daughter. Anne is widely regarded as the hardest-working member of the Royal Family, consistently leading in official engagements.

She serves as Patron or President of over 399 charities, organizations, and military regiments, earning praise as the monarchy’s “trump card.” Her dedication was evident in 2026 when she received a standing ovation at a Six Nations rugby match, highlighting her enduring public admiration.

Charitable Work: Save the Children and Global Impact

Anne’s most enduring charitable role began in 1970 when she became President of Save the Children UK. She has visited developing nations worldwide, and in 1990, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Zambia’s President for her work.

    Other key roles include:

    • President of World Horse Welfare

    • President of the Royal Yachting Association

    • Chancellor of five universities, including Edinburgh and London

    • Colonel-in-Chief of 20+ British and Commonwealth regiments

    • Commandant-in-Chief (Youth) of St John Ambulance

    Global Representation: Historic Tours

Princess Anne has completed 562 overseas visits across 421 tours, with historic firsts including:

    • First royal to visit the USSR (1990) and Vietnam (1994)

    • Antarctic visits in 2002 and 2007 as Patron of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust

    • First royal to visit Little Sark in 2025, commemorating the Channel Islands’ liberation

In 2026, she maintained her duties despite family turmoil, showing unwavering professionalism and dedication.

    Wealth, Lifestyle, and Legacy

Despite her royal status, Anne is famously frugal, recycling outfits, doing her own makeup, and occasionally driving herself. Her estimated net worth is £12 million ($15 million USD), largely from Gatcombe Park estate and personal jewelry.

Princess Anne’s legacy is one of steadfast duty, resilience, and public service. With over five decades of charitable work, an Olympic career, and global representation, she remains the monarchy’s anchor. Her children, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, carry forward her vision of accessible, duty-focused public life.
