Lesley Manville: Iconic British Actress of Stage and Screen

Lesley Manville is one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses, known for her emotional depth, versatility, and unforgettable performances on stage, film, and television. With a career spanning over five decades, she has captivated audiences with roles in Mike Leigh films, her Oscar-nominated performance in Phantom Thread, and her acclaimed portrayal of Princess Margaret in Netflix’s The Crown. Manville’s journey from a working-class childhood in Brighton to becoming a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and a two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner showcases her dedication, talent, and resilience.

    Early Life and Education

Lesley Ann Manville was born on 12 March 1956 in Brighton, East Sussex, the youngest of three daughters. Her father, Ron Manville, was a taxi driver, and her mother, Norma (Jean), was a former ballet dancer. Growing up in a working-class household in Hove, Manville developed a strong work ethic and a passion for performing arts.

From age eight, she trained as a soprano singer, winning under-18 championships in Sussex twice. At 15, she enrolled in the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where she discovered improvisation—a skill that would later define her collaborations with Mike Leigh. Manville turned down dance opportunities, including joining the troupe Hot Gossip, to focus on acting.

    Early Career: Theatre and Television

Manville made her professional stage debut at 16 in the West End musical I and Albert (1972). Her early television roles included guest appearances in Village Hall, Softly Softly: Task Force, and Coronation Street. She gained steady exposure with the regular role of Rosemary Kendall in Emmerdale Farm (1975–1976), appearing in 80 episodes.
