Eve Graham: The Legendary Voice of The New Seekers Who Taught the World to Sing

Eve Graham is one of the most iconic voices in British pop music history, renowned as the soaring lead singer of The New Seekers. With a remarkable three-octave vocal range, her voice became the defining sound of the band, delivering timeless hits like “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” From her early days in Perthshire, Scotland, to performing at the White House, sharing the stage with Liza Minnelli and Neil Diamond, and selling millions of records worldwide, Eve Graham’s career embodies talent, resilience, and dedication to music.

Early Life: Musical Beginnings in Scotland

Born Evelyn May Beatson on 19 April 1943 in Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross, Scotland, Eve discovered her love for singing at just twelve years old. Her early talent led her to audition for top British bandleaders Cyril Stapleton and Joe Loss, paving the way for a professional music career far beyond her Scottish roots.

As a teenager, she formed her first group, The Shortcuts, performing locally and later joining The Cyclones, where she refined her vocal skills and stage presence.

London Years: From The Cyclones to The Nocturnes

In the 1960s, Eve moved to London and joined the Cyril Stapleton Band as a vocalist. She then became a founding member of The Nocturnes, alongside Sandra Stevens and Lyn Paul, recording singles and an album with Columbia Records between 1967 and 1969.

A collaboration with songwriter Roger Cooke on “Smiling Through My Tears” led to her life-changing opportunity with The New Seekers.

    The New Seekers: International Stardom

In 1969, Eve auditioned for The New Seekers, a reformed version of The Seekers, and became the lead female singer.

The band’s breakthrough came with the Coca-Cola jingle “Buy the World a Coke”, later reworked into the hit single “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” The song sold over 12 million copies globally and became a symbol of unity and optimism, with Graham’s vocals at the forefront.

Other hits featuring her lead vocals include:

    • Look What They’ve Done to My Song Ma (US & Canada)

    • Circles (UK Top 5)

    • The Greatest Song I’ve Ever Heard (Japan No. 1)

    • Never Ending Song of Love (UK Top 10)

The New Seekers toured extensively with music legends like Neil Diamond, Gene Pitney, and Liza Minnelli, and represented the UK in the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second.

Solo Career and Rejoining The New Seekers

After the original lineup disbanded in 1974, Eve pursued solo work and cabaret performances. She rejoined a reformed New Seekers in 1976, leading songs like “It’s So Nice to Have You Home” and “I Wanna Go Back”.

Her solo album Woman of the World (1980) showcased her versatility as a singer beyond the group context.

Marriage to Kevin Finn and Duo Performances

Eve married fellow ex-New Seeker Kevin Finn (Danny Finn) in 1979. The couple toured together as a musical duo, releasing singles such as “Ocean and Blue Sky” (1979) and “Your Love” (1981). Their partnership blended personal and professional life until Kevin’s passing in 2016.

    Retirement and Later Work

Eve retired from performing in 2000 but returned with The Mountains Welcome Me Home (2005), an album of Scottish traditional songs and re-recorded New Seekers classics. A Christmas album, Til The Season Comes Round Again, followed in 2006.

She candidly shared in interviews that contractual disputes had prevented her from receiving royalties from the New Seekers since 1973, highlighting the challenges behind the music industry’s glamorous facade.

    Comeback and Recent Projects

In 2018, at 75, Eve released A Matter of Time (The Nashville Dream), including the Scottish favorite Caledonia, followed by a nationwide tour.

In 2025, she re-recorded “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to celebrate the US 250th anniversary. She also performed her first solo concert in her hometown of Perth, “An Evening of Music & Memories”, marking a full-circle moment in her remarkable career.

Personal Life: Love, Loss, and Scottish Roots

Eve Graham was married twice, most notably to Kevin Finn, who passed away in 2016. She has no children, referring to her two Lhasa Apso dogs as her family. She lives in Abernethy, Perth and Kinross, staying closely connected to her Scottish heritage.

Legacy: An Enduring Icon of British Pop

Eve Graham’s influence stretches far beyond commercial success. Her three-octave vocal range and distinctive tone helped define The New Seekers’ sound, leaving an enduring mark on British pop music.

From humble beginnings in Scotland to international fame, navigating personal hardships, and making triumphant musical comebacks, Eve Graham exemplifies resilience, passion, and the transformative power of music. Even at 80, her voice continues to inspire new generations and celebrate the timeless joy of singing.
